AI Lends Me a Helping Hand…But Also Makes Me Nervous

AI is everywhere. Did you realize the featured image on this post was created by AI? It pops up in places where you least expect. And as helpful as it can be, it’s always been something I’ve been wary of and even a little bit nervous about. While completing the Center for Humane Technologies Foundations of Humane Technology course, Chapter 2 reminded me of these feelings that I have tried so hard to push away. Many people love the development of Artificial Intelligence and how it will change the way we work and live and I don’t always seem to be on the same page. AI can create deep fakes using people’s faces and voices without them knowing. How easy it is to generate someone’s voice or face through technology has always made me feel icky. And every day they become increasingly more convincing through the advancements in technology.

Artificial Intelligence is in almost every device that we use which also made me think about how even though some of the uses of artificial intelligence make me feel nervous, there is so much about it that I full heartedly enjoy. Spotify can make playlists specially curated for me based on the music I have saved? Yes please! I can open my phone with just my face? Easy and hands free! A lot of the time, I don’t think of AI in my life as AI because of its ability to help me in my everyday tasks which should definitely count for something.

“As technology develops, it becomes more powerful, cheaper, and more widely accessible. This is often highly beneficial, but it also means we are rapidly disseminating technology with dangerous, exponentially advancing applications.”

– Center For Humane Technology

This perfectly describes the way I think about AI. How do we gauge where we collectively draw the line when it comes to the technological advancements of artificial intelligence so that we can minimize the uses for bad and maximize the potential for good?
