To Link or Not to Link

Have you seen someone try to put a link in their Instagram caption, and it was just a long paragraph that you couldn’t even click on? You might think it’s an Instagram UX error that after 10+ years they haven’t bothered to fix. When really, it’s a tactic to make sure you aren’t led out of their app. Yet, other apps allow you to post links that work. So, that leads us towards the question, to link, or not to link? My initial answer is… it depends. I know, not the cut-and-dry response you were hoping for. But when using links in posts, you must consider platform, content, and relevance.

What apps let you use links? The major ones include:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • X (Formerly Twitter)

With those apps, you should have no problems promoting your desired links. but it’s true that platforms like Instagram and TikTok won’t let you post working links in your captions or comments. But don’t worry, there are ways around it other than abandoning your links entirely. A magic three-word sentence is all you need to get people to click on your link.

“Link in bio”

As simple as it seems, using “link in bio” is the perfect way to bypass the challenges that Instagram and TikTok present to you. “Link in bio” will not only send people to the link in your bio but encourage them to click onto your page and see everything else you have to offer.

What other benefits are there when using “link in bio” as your solution? I’m glad you asked. Putting the link in bio allows you to title that link versus keeping the very long original text. You can also use tools which let you change your link’s destination on a scheduled basis. So, when a scheduled post goes up, your link is scheduled to change at the same time, without you having to worry about going in and changing it. A pretty sweet deal.

So, the ultimate answer to the age-old question…link! But be smart about how you do it.
