In the process of creating my dance research channel and deciding to base my content on the modern day choreographers who have revolutionized the sport and art that dance is, I have reached a point that I feel is necessary to talk about. Who am I to care? To me, this answer is obvious, why WOULDN’T I care? But to my audience, I’m just some girl talking about dance, they don’t know my passion for or history with dance.
So, I decided that my first video of my series would be short and sweet. Not about a famous choreographer, but about me. And why I, and now you, should care. And it will go a little something like this…
“Hi everyone! My name is Maddie, and welcome to my channel! I am excited to immerse you in the world of dance through getting to know the choreographers that have shaped the dance community with their innovative pieces and styles. So, while we all know the classic dance influences who have become household names throughout their careers like George Balanchine and Bob Fosse, it’s time to recognize those who have been revolutionizing the dance world in front of our eyes.
Before I dive into who these choreographers are and the dynasty they’ve created, I wanted to give you a little background about who I am and why this matters.
So, hi again, my name is Maddie, and I have been a dancer for 19 years and counting. I started dancing at the age of 3, as many little girls do and then simply never stopped. Having trained in almost every style under the sun and becoming a competition kid at the age of 8, it’s always been very clear to me that every choreographer is different. And with that, can create pieces and experiences that are unlike any other. Whether I’m bringing a dance to life, or watching it unfold in front of me, I have always had a deep appreciation for the revolutionary work that choreographers do – work that many times, people don’t see or don’t understand.
I am excited to bring you along on this journey of learning and understanding the true depth behind each of the modern choreographers I have selected. See you soon!”
Some people may love it, and some people may hate it. But the beauty about a YouTube channel is that it creates somewhat of a choose your own adventure style experience. You don’t HAVE to go in a linear order to learn about what you want. You can skip and hop around each video. So theoretically, you could skip my introduction entirely. (However, I really hope that’s not the case.) By providing context as to who I am, what “credentials” I have, and why this matters to me and now you, I hope to draw even more people in than I would have before. After all, authenticity is the key to people’s hearts.
So, I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about me, a much smaller deal dancer and choreographer, and stick around to learn about the big deal choreographers who are changing the way the dance world turns.
