Some Final Words

The Bare Bones Camera Course for Film and Video has definitely provided me with a much more diverse skillset for audio and video than what I previously had! Coming from a graphic design background, I am very familiar with Adobe Suite and editing tools but have never gone in depth when it comes to equipment and techniques for filming and recording.

For me, I think one of the most useful things I have learned in this class is the importance of audio. From creating a podcast and being introduced to Adobe Audition, to learning what types of mics to use for interviews and how to successfully record audio to sound clear and crisp is something that I will definitely use moving forward and can help my work stand out from the rest.

The most difficult aspect for me overall was making sure my video quality was as clean as it could be. I am using my camera which I am lucky to have but sometimes I underestimate how much footage I need or how clear my focus actually is, which did lead to some frustrations as I created my project. Nothing I can’t handle though!

Research to Inform

L Cut

This Vogue video with Gracie Abrams showcases great use of L cuts as she gets ready for her 3rd show at Radio City Music Hall. We are met with our first L cut of the video not even a minute in, as she is describing how she gets teary eyed at these shows when the video cuts over to the streets of NYC.

J Cut

This mini documentary “Portrait of a Portrait Artist” Starts right out the gate with a J cut. We are welcomed into the piece with the opening scene and as we are watching the shot continue to unfold, we begin to hear the interviewee speak but have yet to see him. Eventually, the video switches over to show the full interview – audio and video together. This technique is used throughout the piece.

Create

I am so excited to share the story of my teammate, Alexa, who has been making a remarkable recovery from ACL reconstruction surgery. Alexa has been such an inspiration in the way she has handled her injury with such grace and optimism.

I decided to let Alexa narrate her story alone, as she is the one who can tell it best. She had so many insights to share, that it only felt right.

I hope sharing her story not only highlights her grit and determination but shows others that you can make a comeback from an injury like this.

I hope you enjoy!
